Barging in France . Com - Barge and Houseboat Vacations

Houseboats for Rent Bed and Breakfast barges Hotel Barge Cruises Sales, moorings, repairs
Dear Navigator
Welcome to the english language web site dedicated solely to your next vacation by barge or houseboat on the canals and waterways of Europe. We hope that you can pronounce our name. As it implies we are a travel agency specialising in waterways holidays.
We have without doubt the most extensive site on the web dedicated to canal boat holidays in continental europe.
We are the sister company of who are waterways specialists since 1987. For many years we organised and operated our travel business within H2O, but it became more and more obvious that this is a business that deserves to exist in its own right.
H2Olidays was created in July 2001
Barging in France dot com is without doubt your most complete scource for canal boat rental in continental Europe available on the web.
We are a small company and you will have easy and direct contact with the people organising your vacation. We work with most of the major operators and we can always find you the best available boat for where and when you want to cruise. If we don't have the boat that you asked for available, we will propose the closest alternatives. Please let us know which criteria are the most important to you: the exact dates?, the boat?, the company?, the departure base? etc. We are here to help you before, during, and after your trip.
There are not too many images on this site and those that are here have been kept deliberately small in the hope that they will load quickly onto your screen. There are hundreds and hundreds of pages of information to enable you to make your choice. We are constantly upgrading and improving the site and we welcome any comments that you may have to make it load faster and look good on your screen. We have opted for a full screen presentation and so some of the pages may be deformed, especially when printed. Our priority is to get as much information to you as quickly as possible. We love boats and France and we hope that you enjoy this site enough to try out the canals and rivers some time in the near future.
All of the hotel barges and rental boats here are on offer at exactly the same price as offered directly by the operators themselves. We have added no extra booking or payment fees.
We are a fully bonded French Travel agency. Beware of other websites where there is no company name and address as they are probably not travel agents and you have no guarantee that your cruise will take place as booked. If they do not specify their travel agency licence number then they could be closed down at any moment by the authorities concerned in the country that they operate from. We are registered in France and this is one of the most serious qualifications that can be obtained.
We hope that you will find this site informative and friendly and that you will book through us. We need you!
We would like to present to you 3 different types of canal holiday depending on your comfort requirements and budget.
Self Drive Houseboats Bed and Breakfast Barging Hotel Barges
These boats are available on a weekly rental basis in most regions of France and also in Holland, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, and Germany.
No previous experience or driving license is necessary but you should be in normal reasonable physical condition.
The boats are arranged to sleep from 2 to 12 persons and are provided with everything to help you enjoy your holiday; bedding with duvets and linen, fully equipped kitchen with oven and fridge, shower with hot water, heating, bicycles (bicycles are a paid extra) and canal guides.
The boats are regularly inspected by the canal authorities rather like the 'coast guard' inspection and they are fully equipped with safety equipment.
You must of course rent the entire boat. Bargains are available in the mid and low seasons. These boats are very popular so book early. More details.
We work with the barges 'Alphonsia Maria' in the Sancerre region, the barge Who Knows on the Burgundy Canal , and the 'Au Fil de l'Eau' working on the Saone and Rhöne.
These are barges for charter only and based on cruises of 2, 4 or 6 nights. The barges are driven by the owners who live in separate quarters in the aft of the barge. There are 3/4/5 separate sleeping cabins each with a private bathroom. The total sleeping capacity is limited by law to 6 guests (12 on the Au Fil de l'Eau)..
We can arrange any extra services such as a chef to shop, cook and wash up, a guide with minibus, pickup and drop off at a train station or airport, hot air ballooning etc.. (the minibus is usually included with the Who Knows and the Alphonsia Maria). This gives you the maximum flexibility to enjoy the canals and also discover the region.
Prices do not vary throughout the season and so it is a bargain for the summer months. More information.
These are the ultimate in luxury and the most comfortable way to experience the canals.
There are many companies providing either the entire barge for charter or individual cabins. You can sit back and relax and everything is provided for you including crew, meals, excursions, bicycles etc.
Cruises are usually for one week. Many operators arrange pickup and drop off in Paris or the nearest large city.
There is a good ratio of crew to guests, and you will be well taken care of. Excursions ashore enable you to visit the surrounding area whilst still having plenty of time on board.
This is a big market but we have selected a few of our favorite operators to present to you here. Book early as these boats are very popular and are often full 6 months ahead. More information.

History of the Canal de Bourgogne
General history of Burgundy
The history of the Canal of Burgundy is long and complicated, from the first projects in the 17th century to the actual beginnings of construction, the numerous strikes by the builders, to recent political decisions concerning the financing of the canal. The canal du Midi has already been built at this time.
In 1607 the first act towards the construction of the Burgundy canal was the tax placed on the local farmers to help the financing of the canal section between Dijon and Saint Jean de Losne. It was not until 1696, when a study realised by Vauban, who considered the 5 possible routes the canal could use to connect the rivers Saône and Yonne. There were many arguments concerning the route of the canal, civil engineers who disagreed, local mayors who desired the canal to pass as closely as possible, for they understood the economical importance of the trade that would arrive, land owners wishing to sell at very interesting prices.
A project by Mr de la Jonchere in 1718, saw the canal with it's summit at the small town of Sombernon, the States of Burgundy charged Mr Abeille in 1724 with the mission of studying the Pouillenay valley. He conclusions concerning the canal were given three years later. The route of the canal was finally decided and accepted.
At the beginning of the reign of Louis XVI in 1765, the construction of the Burgundy canal began on the side of the Yonne working upstream towards the town of Tonnerre, and a few years later the work began on the Saône side towards Dijon. The cost of the construction was assumed by the French state on the Yonne side up to the limits of Burgundy, and the Burgundy state with a subvention financed the rest of the construction.
The Yonne side of the canal fell rapidly behind schedule, and due to poor funding the construction of the canal halted in 1793. The state of Burgundy however, pushed ahead and the canal was completed between the city of Dijon and the river Saône, on the 14th of December 1808 the first barges arrived in the port of Dijon. During the revolution all work was stopped.
Go back
Even with the insistence of Napoleon the 1st, difficulties concerning the construction and the continual poor funding of the project, the canal construction could not advance. It was not until 1822, after a loan of 25 million francs, that the enthusiasm and courage came forth to complete the project. On the 28th of December 1832 a barge crossed the summit of the canal via the tunnel, and the Burgundy canal at last connected the north of France to the south, the river Seine connected to the river Rhone.
The final part of the construction of the Burgundy canal was the complicated and impressive tunnel, which is at the summit. This tunnel is 3.333 kilometres long in a straight line, you must remember that at these times 90% of the work was manual. At its deepest section there is 48 metres of land above the tunnel. The building of the tunnel began in 1826 and was terminated in 1832, the work was very difficult and dangerous, and quite a few workers lost their lives during the digging. The tunnel is ventilated by 32 wells, which climb to the surface; they were also used to assist in excavating the earth during the digging. the tunnels were added to the construction after a few years of operation, after it was realized that the pollution generated by the steal boat tug was dangerous.
The Burgundy Canal Tunnel is wide enough for one barge to pass at a time, so a traffic system has always been used, (managed by the lock keepers at both ends). There was no room for a horse to tow the barge, so they crossed over the hill along the tree alley where the wells can still be seen. Meanwhile, until a tug system was developed, the men had to pull on a special cable and using gaffs to haul the barge through the tunnel. The first tug arrived on the canal in 1867, as steam powered vessel continued to pull barges through until 1893 when an electrical tug was installed.

ABOUT HOTEL BARGES AND BARGE CRUISES ...
Historically, they were working barges (peniche, in French), but have been transformed into elegant floating hotels ... and the vacation experience of a lifetime!
Hotel barge cruises are seven days and six nights
Charter a barge for friends, families, groups, or book individual cabins on most barges.
Costs range from $1,790 to over $5,000 per person, based on double occupancy. The average is about $3,200 per person. A few barges have single cabins with no single supplement.
Barge cruises are typically ALL-INCLUSIVE: private cabin with bath, all meals, wines, open bar, escorted side excursions. (Air fare not included).
Most barges cruise in Burgundy or the South of France (Canal du Midi), although there are cruises similar to a French barge cruise in other regions, including England, Scotland, Ireland, Holland, Belgium, Germany, and Italy.
WHAT MAKES A HOTEL BARGE CRUISE SO SPECIAL ...
The outstanding cuisine aboard the barge, with local wines and cheeses to accompany meals.
The beauty and tranquility of the canals and rivers, with the chance to bike and walk along the canal or waterway.
The pampering and attention from enthusiastic crew members, and the luxury of having them provide individualized, personal, guided tours of special places along the way.

SPECIAL PLACES TRAVEL, LLC.
MASTER LIST OF HOTEL BARGES: 2006
FRANCE, BELGIUM, ENGLAND, GERMANY, HOLLAND, IRELAND, SCOTLAND, ITALY
The following chart contains information on rates/itineraries for hotel barges in France, as well as Belgium, England, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Scotland, and Italy. Note that rates and itineraries may change at any time. Prices below are for the 2006 season. (Note that special prices may apply to some barges. See special offers at BARGES IN FRANCE SPECIALS PAGE.) To ensure the best match between your individual preferences and what is available, please contact us as soon as you start your planning.
What is included. Unless noted, a barge cruise is seven days and six nights, and most start on Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Price includes all meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), alcoholic beverages, transfers, and excursions, except where noted. In France, most Burgundy canal barges include transfer from and to Paris in their price (some even on the TGV train!), whereas barges in the Canal du Midi, for example, typically don't include transfers from Paris. In England, Scotland, Ireland, Belgium, Germany, Holland, and Italy, transfers are included from major cities nearest the river cruise route.
Charter prices apply to "whole boat" charter, with the maximum number of guests. For chartering with fewer than the maximum number of passengers, special rates apply. Charters are a fantastic way to celebrate friendships and to turn special occasions into a gala week for everyone.
"Per Person" prices are based on double occupancy. For nearly all barges, a single supplement applies. Booking by individual cabin is great -- you'll share in the adventure with other passengers, and many of our individual cabin bookings have found friendships for life.
"Value" and "Regular" Season Prices. Where a range is given, the lower price applies to the "value" season, if available, and the higher price applies to the "regular season." Value season prices can be as much as $700 to $1,200 per person lower than regular season prices. Value season varies by barge, but typically applies to the first three weeks in April and the last two weeks in October through November. In the Canal du Midi and some other areas, value seasons also may include mid-July/August in addition to the early and late season. Some barges have introduced a "Mid Season" price for July/August and a week or two in early and late season.
For all the specific rates, click on the individual hotel barge web site, below, or call/email us.
About the barges and canals. Most barges are 16.5 feet wide, and 80 to 128 feet long. All the barges are air-conditioned except where indicated in the chart, below. For cruising in France, we believe that the Nivernais and Briare Canals in the Burgundy region, and the Canal du Midi in the South of France are the most beautiful, but as you see, there is something for everyone. Barges in England, Scotland, Ireland, Holland, Belgium, Germany, and Italy cruise through equally beautiful regions, unique to each country. Whatever your preference, we can help guide you to the right canal or waterway, the right barge or boat, that most matches your preferences.

Welcome Aboard the Fandango & Tango, two of France's most authentic and beautiful boutique hotel barges. Owner operated, we guarantee an exclusive and unforgettable vacation for your group of 4 to 12. Our cruises float through the Languedoc, one of Southern France's most fascinating regions, recently dubbed "the next Provence." Our waterway is the picture-perfect 300 year old Canal du Midi, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and considered to be the prettiest canal in France.

Fandango and Tango are famous for the beautiful décor and fine gourmet cuisine and wine served on board. Featured in such publications as 'Bon Appetit', 'Travel & Leisure' and 'Food and Wine', our vessels are one of the best ways to sample local delicacies of Southern France, both on board and at local restaurants, a unique feature of the cruise program.

A barge cruise on Fandango or Tango means relaxed luxury plus a chance for up-close contact to a stimulating local culture. Each day will be a flowing experience of cruising for a few hours and enjoying a daily sightseeing excursion in our air-conditioned mini-van. This can be to visit local sites of historic or cultural interest, shop at open air markets, enjoy winetastings and the olives from the prize winning olive oil mill, l'Oulibo. While the barge cruises at a leisurely pace you can walk alongside, ride a bicycle into the countryside or simply put your feet up on our provencal tiled decks while the chef prepares your next delicious meal. An English-speaking crew of four pampers you the week long.

In the words of our passengers:
"Thank you so much for a fabulous week of great tours, delicious cuisine and spectacular sights on the canal du midi, it's been a trip of a lifetime! "
Steve&Lin S. Bellevue WA.

"We appreciate all the personal attention you gave to our cruise group it was even more fabulous than we had anticipated; you are real professionals."
Agatha&Rod K. Waterhead IL.

"We will have wonderful memories to take home with us (To say nothing of the hundreds of photos & videos of our cruise on the Canal du Midi) We have loved hazel, and the terrific crew of Daniel's barge - by far the best on the Midi. We will miss you."
